Our store manager fired one of us Customer Service Reps last week, and an ad was posted in the daily paper on Friday to announce the position. We were unprepared; on Friday easily 50 people showed up, in addition to the number of people who simply emailed resumes in to the manager.
Monday was no exception, and the store was filled with applicants all day long. Some applicants were the typical disheveled wanderers-in but many were obviously over-qualified. The level of desperation expressed by the applicants was barely masked; "can I see a manager now?" "When can we expect to hear back?" At one point I remarked to one of my colleagues, "Jeez, you'd almost think that we're on the verge of collapse, or something, lol" to which he responded, "well, yeah!"
