Fundamentals

Had a success Monday night rounding up deadbeats. In about two hours, I served four of them. Saturday will also be a workday, followed by a rousing round of poker at Lee and Luke's place. I expect to lose my shirt, keeping in tradition of the last two times. The fist three games I made money on, though. I'm a horrible gambler and liar.

This Thursday I spent a good amount of time with Lee. He came over to Campbell Mithun for a liquid lunch, then again to hang out and drink beer after 4:30 until we closed at 6pm. Then we headed over to the Red Sea tavern to see a live performance of Methuselah; a band composed of friends of his who I have met a few times. Fun guys, and the music was pretty good, really. The audience certainly seemed like they were there to see them, the opening band, rather than the other two headliners. We drank whiskey there until about 9pm after which we hung at Lee's place for bit before heading over to The Liffy. I had never been there before, and wasn't looking forward to the experience much since Lee made us walk there. It must have been about a six mile walk. Once we got there, though I was impressed. It's nice and dark in there! The darkish ceiling and woodwork also added to the ambiance. Plus, the government allows us to smoke in there! We had some drinks and appetizers, plus a couple rounds of Irish Car Bombs, which is one of my favorite drinks. I could drink them all day and night. It was a first time for Lee and I don't think he was terribly impressed since he drank it too slowly and ended up layering.

After that, we made the arduous voyage back to their place. It must have taken a couple hours to walk that far, but we finally made it. I am not one for bi-pedal travel. Taxi!

Once there the democracy outvoted me into watching episode after episode of Deep Space 9. I wasn't that impressed. For one thing, I don't really watch TV. For another thing, I don't watch Star Trek! It had its moments, I guess but my main consolation was an unwanted half-empty bottle of Yukon Jack. I made a valiant effort to kill it, but was barely unsuccessful in doing so. Despite the kind efforts of my hosts in pulling out the little hide-a-bed, I found myself waking up on the floor of their apartment, as usual. Eventually I found my way to the little bed, only to be awaked rudely at 12Noon by my ringing mobile phone.

It was the boss. I had taken the day off, in anticipation of a long night of debauchery. Tracy, my boss, and I had a delightful conversation:

Me: Hi Tracy

Tracy: Jeremy, the wheels have fallen off the bus. We are swamped. Is there any chance you could come in?

M: Umm, yeah I guess. I'll just need to catch a bus so it'll be a little bit.

T: Where is your truck?

M: At work.

T: Where are you?

M: In St Paul

T: umm...have you showered or anything?

M: Nope! And I've got beer and ketchup stains all up and down the front of my shirt that I slept in!

T: Jesus Christ, Jeremy.

M: I'll see you in a little bit!

After wandering around the apartment for a little bit, pounding a glass of water, I bummed $.50 for the bus from Lee and made my way to the bus stop. It must have been a mile to the stop, with downtown people staring at my bedraggled, stained appearance the whole way. Once on the bus, though I fit right in! Then again in downtown Mpls I made a spectacle of myself walking the streets to get to our building.

Once there, I borrowed a fresh t-shirt from Drunk Andy and proceeded to put it on in our little lunch room. Just then our 70+ year old mailroom employee, Maggie, walked back and saw me.

Me: Oh, hi Maggie. Excuse me.

Maggie: What are you doing?

Me: Changing my shirt. This one has beer and ketchup all over it, but Andy was kind enough to lend me a fresh one.

Maggie: Oh my god. You're crazy.

I'm pretty sure that I'm going to hear about that little incident on Monday. Tracy was delighted that I came in, though and just before leaving early for the day told Andy and I to take a cooler of beer home each which was left over from the party on Tuesday. We obliged.
